Singular Hydroxid das, -(e)s, Verbindungen von vorwiegend metallischen Elementen mit Hydroxidionen. Hydroxide der Metalle mit niederer Wertigkeit sind häufig gut löslich und bilden stark basisch reagierende Lösungen (alkalische Reaktion), z. B. Natriumhydroxid, NaOH. Metalle mit mittlerer Wertigkeit (2-4) bilden schwer lösliche Hydroxide, die teils basisch, teils amphoter reagieren, z. B. Calciumhydroxid, Ca(OH)2, Aluminiumhydroxid, Al(OH)3. Hydroxide der Metalle höchster Wertigkeit (5-7) sowie von Nichtmetallen verhalten sich sauer und werden meist nicht zu den Hydroxiden gezählt.
